In Loving Memory of Bevan Fidler A True Taniwha Fan, Forever Part of Our Waka

Rise the Taniwha
It is with deep sadness and immense respect that the Northland Rugby Union acknowledges the passing of Bevan Fidler—a man whose talent, generosity, and passion for Northland Rugby were truly unmatched.

Bevan was more than a supporter. He was an artist, a visionary, and a loyal friend of our Union. His iconic artwork—most recently captured in the powerful “Rise the Taniwha” piece—was not only visually striking but spiritually uplifting. It became a rallying cry for our region and a symbol of pride that resonated far beyond the rugby field.

During times when resources were tight, Bevan gave freely. His exceptional graphic design work, offered without expectation of recognition or reward, formed the visual heartbeat of Northland Rugby for many years. He helped us look the part when we were building from the ground up—lifting our presence, our pride, and our mana.

Bevan’s work helped forge lasting relationships with our local media, particularly the Northern Advocate, and his unique ability to connect and inspire brought many into the fold of our rugby community.

Above all, Bevan loved Northland. His support was unwavering, his contribution unmeasurable. He believed in the power of our people and our game—and he gave his all to it. He was there for Northland Rugby through thick and thin, and staunchly passionate despite the result. He often recounted the Ranfurly Shield glory days, and their retelling in cartoon form by Bob Darroch. He sent through the proudest of texts after the Taniwha famously beat Auckland at home for the first time in many years – it was his Dad celebrating post-match with a player, declaring the pride in the moment and a tear in their eyes.

Bevan was a true Taniwha. His spirit remains woven into the fabric of Northland Rugby, and we will carry his legacy forward with pride.

To his whānau, loved ones, and all who knew and admired him—we extend our heartfelt aroha.

Rest easy, Bevan. Your light will always shine in the North.

Ka moe, e hoa. Haere rā.
