Ryan’s elevation to the top role represents both continuity and fresh energy for the Taniwha. Having already embedded himself within the Northland Rugby environment, he brings with him a deep understanding of the team’s culture, systems, and vision for the future. His appointment ensures that the progress made in 2024 is not only maintained, but accelerated as the team builds toward long-term success.
A highly respected figure in the international rugby coaching community, Ryan boasts an impressive coaching pedigree, with experience across top-level clubs in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and the United States. His most recent roles include Assistant Coach (Attack & Backs) at Toyota Verblitz in Japan, the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby, and Head Coach of the New England Free Jacks in Major League Rugby.
Ryan joined Northland Rugby in 2024 with a clear focus on developing the Taniwha’s attacking identity. His innovative approach to attack and kicking systems was evident throughout the season, contributing to a more dynamic and exciting style of play. Off the field, Ryan’s background in education has enabled him to bring a teaching lens to player development, fostering a team environment that prioritises growth, learning, and accountability.
“I’m incredibly honoured to be taking on the Head Coach role at Northland,” said Martin. “After a year working with Dale and the wider team, I’ve seen firsthand the heart, grit, and potential in this group. I’m excited to continue building on that foundation. Northland has a proud rugby history and an exciting future – I’m committed to helping us reach that next level.”
The appointment of Ryan Martin reinforces Northland Rugby Union’s commitment to continuity, growth, and high performance. With Ryan already familiar with the systems, players, and strategic vision, the transition into 2025 will be seamless and aligned with the organisation’s goals of developing homegrown talent and delivering strong performances on the national stage.
High Performance Manager, Brad Te Haara, commented, “Ryan is a great fit for this role. He has earned the respect of players and staff alike and brings a great energy that aligns perfectly with our direction. We’re confident he will continue to drive positive momentum for the Taniwha and our rugby community.”
