Northland Rugby is excited to welcome Brett Williamson as our new Academy Manager, bringing a wealth of coaching experience and a strong passion for player development. Brett will officially step into the role on April 1st, 2025, leading the Northland Male Academy Player Development Programme and driving the identification and progression of emerging rugby talent across the region.

With an extensive coaching background spanning grassroots to representative rugby, Brett’s expertise will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of Northland Taniwha players. His coaching journey includes key roles such as Assistant Coach for Mid Canterbury in the Heartland Championship, Set Piece Coach for the Junior Crusaders, and Assistant Coach for St Andrew’s College 1st XV. Brett has worked across various levels of the game, refining his ability to develop young athletes both technically and mentally for high-performance rugby.

Brett’s philosophy centers around creating an educational and inclusive environment, ensuring players not only excel on the field but also grow as individuals. His track record in talent identification, defensive system design, and one-on-one player development makes him an exceptional fit for Northland Rugby’s high-performance pathway.

Northland Rugby High-Performance Manager, Brad Te Haara, expressed his enthusiasm for Brett’s appointment:

His deep understanding of player development, particularly in the critical transition from school to high-performance rugby, aligns perfectly with our vision for the Academy. In his new role, Brett will work closely with secondary schools, clubs, and representative teams to identify and nurture young players with the potential to represent Northland at higher levels. He will also lead the Future Taniwha Programme, ensuring that identified players are seamlessly integrated into Northland Rugby’s high-performance pathway while maintaining strong connections with The Blues and New Zealand Rugby.

Brett’s appointment signals an exciting step forward in Northland Rugby’s commitment to fostering homegrown talent and strengthening pathways for young athletes to succeed at provincial and national levels.
