Northland Rugby Union Welcomes Blair Baxter as NPC Taniwha Assistant Coach

Blair Baxter
Northland Rugby Union is pleased to announce the appointment of Blair Baxter as Assistant Coach for the Cancer Society Northland Taniwha NPC team ahead of the 2025 Bunnings Warehouse NPC season.

Baxter joins from Mid Canterbury Rugby, where he served as Game Development Manager, driving growth and excellence across community and representative rugby.  His departure was confirmed by Mid Canterbury today, with the union acknowledging the contribution Baxter made both on and off the field during his time in the region.

With an extensive background in high-performance coaching, Baxter brings a wealth of experience to Northland. He was previously Head Coach of the Canterbury Farah Palmer Cup side, leading them to three consecutive finals and two national titles with a 96% win rate. More recently, he coached Super Rugby Aupiki side Matatū to a championship title in 2023. Internationally, Baxter worked with the China Women’s Sevens team, securing a gold medal at the 2023 Asia Games, and has held coaching roles with New Zealand U18 and Development Sevens squads.

His new role sees him return to men’s provincial rugby—an environment he is eager to re-engage with.

“I’m excited to get back into men’s rugby and join a region with such a proud and passionate identity,” said Baxter. “Northland has an incredible community and a playing group with a real hunger to grow. I’m looking forward to helping develop a high-performing, connected environment.”

Northland Rugby Union’s Head of High Performance, Brad Te Haara, said Baxter’s appointment is a strategic move to strengthen the coaching group and overall performance programme.

“Blair’s proven ability to build strong team cultures and develop players across the performance spectrum will be a real asset to our environment,” said Brad.

“He brings not just technical and tactical knowledge, but a leadership style grounded in care and collaboration—values that align perfectly with our direction.”

Baxter will relocate to Northland in the coming weeks and begin work with the squad as preparations build toward the 2025 season.
