Northland Rugby and Northland Road Safety Team Up to Tackle Drink Driving

Northland Road Safety
Northland Rugby is proud to announce our continued partnership with Northland Road Safety in 2025, working together to deliver a clear and consistent message: Tackle Drink Driving.

This campaign aims to reduce alcohol-related harm on our roads by promoting safer choices and encouraging fans to plan ahead and look after each other. By using the power of sport to spark important conversations, the Tackle Drink Driving initiative is building a culture of responsibility and care, both on and off the field.

With alcohol-free zones at all home games, the message is already embedded in the matchday experience. But we’re taking it even further this season. The Tackle Drink Driving message is now front and centre on-field, on a player’s shirt, across Northland Rugby’s social media, in Far North cinemas, through PA announcements at games, and at dedicated fan engagement zones.

“We know that sport brings people together, and that’s exactly what this campaign is about: coming together to look after each other. Tackle Drink Driving is a powerful reminder that every choice matters. Whether you’re behind the wheel or cheering from the sidelines, we all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. We’re stoked to be teaming up with Northland Rugby Union to bring this message to life in a fun and engaging way.” — Nicole Korach, Programme Manager – Road Safety Promotion

Throughout the season, the Northland Road Safety team will be on-site at every home game in the family zone. Fans are invited to stop by, try on the impairment goggles, play a round of corn hole, and chat with the team about getting home safely. The goal is to create memorable, family-friendly moments that drive home the importance of having a sober driver and looking out for your mates.

“This campaign goes beyond just signage—it’s about real conversations, real change, and real impact. As a community organisation, we have a responsibility to lead by example and help create a safer Northland. We’re proud to be working alongside Northland Road Safety to keep this message front and centre,” — Paul Lennane, CEO, Northland Rugby

The Tackle Drink Driving campaign is built around three key messages:

  • Plan ahead: Know how you’re getting home before you head out.
  • Check in with your mates: Make sure no one is driving under the influence.
  • Someone take one for the team: Nominate a sober driver and stick to the plan.

Northland Road Safety data shows that alcohol remains a contributing factor in too many road crashes in our region. By bringing this message into high-energy, community-led environments like Northland Rugby home games, the campaign aims to meet people where they are and start conversations that matter.

This partnership represents a strong alignment of values – community, responsibility, and teamwork. Together, Northland Rugby and Northland Road Safety are committed to creating a safer region for all Northlanders.

Come see us at the game and join the movement. Let’s tackle drink driving together.
