Josh Hyde Appointed as Northland Rugby’s New Community Rugby and Operations Manager

Josh Hyde
Northland Rugby is proud to announce the appointment of Josh Hyde as our new Community Rugby and Operations Manager. In this pivotal leadership role, Josh will oversee the direction and delivery of community rugby across Te Tai Tokerau, including managing our team of Rugby Development Officers (RDOs) and driving the planning and execution of game day operations for our Bunnings NPC and Farah Palmer Cup teams.

A familiar face within our Union, Josh has already made a lasting impact through his previous roles with Northland Rugby, from RDO, to women’s high performance manager, coaching positions and more. His journey in rugby began at the grassroots level, playing for Waitemata Rugby Club in West Auckland at just three years old and later volunteering extensively as a coach and committee member. This hands-on experience gave him a deep appreciation for the vital role volunteers play in the success of community rugby—an understanding that underpins his approach today.

Josh’s professional journey is as diverse as it is inspiring. From studying journalism and interviewing a young Steven Adams, to managing supermarket operations in Rotorua, and eventually studying a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation, his path has uniquely prepared him to lead with empathy, insight, and operational excellence.

His operational credentials are extensive, including leading match operations for the Rugby World Cup 2021 (played in 2022), serving as Match Manager for major fixtures involving the Blues and Moana Pasifika, and earning World Rugby certifications as an Educator, Trainer, and Match Commissioner. His international experience includes officiating at Super Rugby U20s and supporting finals at Eden Park—bringing a global standard of delivery back to Northland.

Josh’s passion for rugby and community connection drives him daily. He describes the joy of game day as “priceless,” and he’s motivated by providing a life of love and opportunity for his young family. His leadership style is marked by empathy, foresight, and an unwavering commitment to growth—both personally and for the game in our region.

Josh says “I am excited to be stepping into this leadership role within the community, having started as an RDO I have an appreciation for the tough job it is working in such a large area, it is a good challenge to keep the union on track and thriving.”

As we head into a busy and exciting 2025 season, we are thrilled to have Josh at the helm of our community rugby and operations. His vision, experience, and heart for the game make him the perfect person to lead us forward.

CEO Cameron Bell, says “Josh has developed, matured and grown positively in his time here at Northland Rugby. To be able to promote from within to a position of leading our community game, speaks volumes to his capability, and passion for our game – while also running the cutter gameday at Semenoff Stadium for NPC, FPC and international rugby games. We are excited for what Josh will add to our game, and his potential to grow it further into the future.”

Please join us in congratulating Josh on this well-deserved appointment!
